No chickens? Yes, I can.

Do we bring our chickens to your house when we go out of town?
No, for your hen's safety and comfort they should stay home in their familiar surroundings.
To prevent the spread of disease and limit their stress, I come to your backyard.
What if I am away longer than expected? Can you still look after my chickens?
As soon as you know that you will be delayed in returning and will require extra days of service, please contact me immediately as I may have other bookings straight after your dates which may cause conflict. I will endeavour to make the best arrangements for your needs.
Do you bring snacks or treats for our chickens?
I ask that my clients provide all snacks and treats, regular feed, bedding, and shell grit that can be easily accessed.
I happily do treats shopping for my clients if a little spending money is left.
Do you stay in my yard all day?
Just a quick visit is what most of our clients need. A session is around 20 minutes.
Food, water, egg pick up, light general clean, a general inspection of their health and a little social time.
Are you able to monitor incubated eggs, baby chicks or a brooding mother hen?
If your hen has fertilised eggs under her, I can take care of her.
Broody hens can also be a regular occurrence amongst hens that have no rooster, in which case I ask for your preferred method of dealing with their behaviour. Wooden dummy eggs (with adequate food/water in nest) or removal of the hen from her nest on each visit are the most common techniques used.
Incubated eggs and baby chicks need careful monitoring that is best for the owner to care of with dedication, in case of hatching and heating needs.
Do you keep the eggs from your chicken-sitting jobs?
Yes, I can. It all depends on the clients. You may prefer your eggs to be stored in a sealed container or egg carton in a place out of the weather; preferably inside the fodder shed, back veranda or in the carport. Or I can gladly take them home or drop off at to a neighbour. Just advise me on your preference at the time of booking.
What will you do if an emergency occurs?
Before taking on any jobs I like to chat and visit with the owner to get to know the yard layout, location of the feed/water, the needs of the flock and collect any keys for access, at no cost. I will always ask for your contact details and your preference of vet that I may contact in your absence.
Adelaide Chicken Sitting Service is not responsible for any breeches in your chicken coop facilities. I will inspect your yard and coop for any problems and assist where possible as a general rule of courtesy. On our initial visit with you I ask that you sign our release form so that Adelaide Chicken Sitting Service are not held responsible for any unforeseen acts of God, weather or predators.
How far in advance do I need to book you for holidays?
The holiday season can get very busy so I ask you to let us know as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Can you let me know how my flock's health was during my time away?
Yes, certainly. Adelaide Chicken Sitting Service offers a daily SMS service to confirm that I have been and all is OK. Or I can leave a duty check sheet at the end of our visit period to inform you about your flock's well-being and yard security. The choice is all yours.
Can you clean out the chicken tractor/coop/shed as well?
This is an extra service that Adelaide Chicken Sitting Service offers.
Contact me for details.
What will you do with the waste materials that you clean out of my coop?
I believe in a permaculture approach to suburban gardening which uses chicken waste to enhance the garden. As I cannot remove the materials from your yard, I can bag and seal it, setting it aside for you to dispose of on your return. Alternatively, I can place the manure and used bedding materials straight into to your compost bin or other designated container.
In case of disease, known of or observed during cleaning, I will place the waste materials into a sealed bag immediately. The health of your flock is paramount.
Clients must provide replacement bedding and flooring for the clean-out. I provide our my cleaning products which are safe and appropriate for chicken coop cleaning which will not endanger your hens' respiratory system.
What is the difference between a ONCE a DAY visit and a TWICE a DAY visit?
Some clients prefer their free-range chickens to be let out in the morning and locked up again at night. Other clients have their chickens inside a shed/fenced yard all the time. Your yard will dictate the number of visits per day to suit your flock.
Some clients like the option of booking an extra Once a Day visit on the morning of their return so that their chickens are let out for the day.
If your flock has any pecking issues and is picking on one hen in particular, I recommend a twice a day visit. Many clients allow one hen to be separated from the flock during the day time and rehouse with the flock again at night especially during the cold months.
How will you access my property?
Clients have different access requirements to their properties. I will personally collect a spare set of keys from you on the initial visit.
Side gate or lockable carports are the most common. Your keys will be labelled and kept in a locked safety box. Your key will be returned to you as negotiated. However, you may also choose to entrust us with a permanent set of keys for the convenience of future bookings.
Garden watering?
Yes, certainly. Offered as a complimentary service. Please advise at the time of booking.
Is there a contract to sign for petsitting?
Yes, I always ask my clients to sign a contract that details when I will be visiting your pets so you can be sure I will be there. The contract also says that you give me the legal right onto your property. Included on the contract will be any emergency numbers of friends/family or vet.
Will you work at any schools, kindergartens or other businesses?
No. I strictly provide service for private home owners/renters with pet care.
